Single-Incision Weight Loss Surgery in Mexico
Hospital Azar offers a cutting-edge solution for patients seeking a minimally invasive weight loss surgery: Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS). This advanced procedure is designed to achieve the same results as traditional bariatric surgeries but with fewer scars, a faster recovery, and reduced postoperative discomfort.
What is Single-Incision Gastric Sleeve Weight Loss Surgery?
Single-incision weight loss surgery is a revolutionary approach where only one small incision, typically near the belly button, is made to perform the surgery. This method provides an enhanced cosmetic outcome and limits visible scarring compared to conventional laparoscopic techniques, which typically require 3-5 incisions.
Hospital Azar’s highly skilled bariatric surgeons specialize in single-incision gastric sleeve and single-incision gastric bypass, offering effective, FDA-approved weight loss procedures in Mexico at a fraction of the cost of surgeries in the U.S. and Canada.
During the procedure, a small incision is made near the patient’s belly button under anesthesia. The surgeon inflates the abdomen using carbon dioxide to create a workable space for the operation. Through this same incision, the surgeon inserts a specialized access device, allowing the use of a camera and necessary surgical tools. This incision is typically made at or just above the navel.
The procedure involves separating part of the stomach and cutting off the blood vessels that supply the section to be removed. A calibration tube, known as a bougie, is inserted through the mouth and down into the stomach to guide the stapling of the stomach into a sleeve shape. Once the stomach is reshaped, the removed portion is extracted through the same small incision, and the area is carefully closed.
The entire operation generally takes around 90 minutes, with patients usually discharged two days after surgery. In about 14% of cases, an additional small tool called a trocar is inserted to help lift the liver, which is essential for the success of the procedure.

Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG), also known as Gastric sleeve surgery, rapidly rose to the preferred weight loss surgery around the world. In this procedure, the restriction of caloric intake and hunger reduction is achieved by removing about 85% of the stomach. The majority of hunger hormones are removed as the patient does not feel as hungry and feels full faster.
The conventional laparoscopic gastric sleeve operates using 3 to 5 tiny incisions, whereas the single-incision laparoscopic sleeve decreases the number of entry points down to 1 incision. A scarless gastric sleeve is becoming popular for many patients with a BMI under 40. Advantages of SILS,
- Reduced scarring
- Faster recovery time
- Reduced post-operative pain
- Reduced chance of wound site infection/hernias
Occasionally, a second incision is needed to place a drain as a safety measure to help remove accumulated fluids in the abdomen and reduce swelling.
The SILS procedure has many benefits. It reduces scarring on the body and shortens both healing as well as recovery time significantly compared to traditional bariatric surgery.
It is reported that patients with the single-incision procedure experience;
Minimally Invasive
Shorter Recovery Time
Aesthetically Pleasing
Improve Healing Experience
Less Pain Than Regular Sleeve
Similar Weight Loss
Back to Work Sooner
Reduced Infection Rate
A study by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) shows that patients can lose up to 82% of their excess weight (%EWL) in the first year following gastric sleeve surgery.
At Hospital AZAR, our patients often see a weight loss of 60-100% of their excess weight within 1-2 years after surgery. On average, you can expect to lose 2-3 pounds per week in the initial six months, which equates to about 10 pounds per month.
Here’s a breakdown of average excess weight loss (%EWL) after gastric sleeve surgery:
- 3 months: 25% to 34%
- 6 months: 33% to 60%
- 12 months: 63% to 85%
- 3 years: 71% to 94%
- 5 years: 56% to 98%
By following the recommended post-op diet and exercising regularly, you can expect to lose up to 90% of your excess weight within two years of undergoing gastric sleeve surgery at our state-of-the-art facility in Mexico.
Hospital Azar’s surgeons utilize advanced technology such as the GelPOINT Port and COVIDIEN SILS™ Port for performing single-incision laparoscopic surgeries. These cutting-edge tools allow for a minimally invasive approach by enabling the use of multiple instruments through a single insertion point.
GelPOINT Port The GelPOINT Advanced Access Platform, manufactured by Applied Medical, is designed for procedures like single-incision gastric sleeve and gastric banding. It offers a low internal profile and a wider external profile, allowing greater flexibility in moving instruments during surgery, making it ideal for complex laparoscopic procedures.
COVIDIEN SILS™ Port The COVIDIEN SILS™ Multi-Access Port from Medtronic is tailored for single-incision laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy. This device provides optimal access, enhanced maneuverability, and ease of use, making it perfect for performing Single Site Sleeve Gastrectomy with minimal invasiveness and maximum precision.
The history of single puncture laparoscopic surgery, or SILS, first originated with general surgery in 1992 – Pelosi performed the first SILS laparoscopic appendectomy. Since then, single-incision has been used for many different applications of surgical procedures, such as hernia repair, gastric banding, colectomy, hysterectomy, nephrectomy, and sacrocolpopexy, with very effective outcomes.
