Robotic Bariatric Surgery in Mexico
Robotic bariatric surgery is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive option that enhances the safety, precision, and outcomes of traditional weight loss surgeries. Utilizing the Da Vinci robotic system, our surgeons at Hospital Azar perform complex procedures with greater control and visualization—resulting in faster recovery and fewer complications.
Robotic surgery is available for several bariatric procedures, including sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass (RNY), and duodenal switch. This advanced technology is ideal for patients seeking a safer, more precise surgical approach with long-term weight loss success.
How Robotic Bariatric Surgery Works
Robotic surgery uses advanced technology to assist the surgeon in performing highly accurate and complex movements through a few small incisions:
- A high-definition 3D camera provides a magnified view of the internal anatomy.
- Robotic arms mimic the surgeon’s hand movements with improved dexterity.
- This allows for more precise tissue dissection, suturing, and stapling—reducing risk of complications.
The robotic system does not operate independently—the surgeon is in complete control at all times.
Types of Robotic Bariatric Procedures Offered
Robotic Sleeve Gastrectomy (RSG)
Removes 80% of the stomach, creating a narrow sleeve-shaped pouch. It limits food intake and reduces hunger hormones like ghrelin.
- Surgery Time: ~1 hour
- Expected Weight Loss: 60–80% excess weight
- Complication Rate: 1–2%
- Ideal for: Patients wanting a restrictive-only option with precision and low complication risk
Robotic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RNY)
Combines restriction and malabsorption by creating a small pouch and bypassing a portion of the small intestine. The robotic approach enhances visibility and control in this more complex surgery.
- Surgery Time: ~1.5 hours
- Expected Weight Loss: 70–85% excess weight
- Complication Rate: 1.5–2.5%
- Ideal for: Patients wanting a more effective surgery or have GERD
Robotic Duodenal Switch (RDS)
A combination of sleeve gastrectomy and intestinal bypass. Offers the highest weight loss potential but requires lifelong vitamin supplementation.
- Surgery Time: ~2.5 hours
- Expected Weight Loss: 85%+ excess weight
- Complication Rate: 2–3%
- Ideal for: High-BMI patients or those with metabolic diseases like Type 2 diabetes
Key Benefits of Robotic Bariatric Surgery
